There’s Nothing Funny about Business
Oct 25, 2025
Humor doesn't heal startup scars - but honesty does.
Founding a company isn't funny. Surviving it is heroic.
When the average person thinks of work, they envision offices, desks, labor, and other things that surround workers. But they never suggest that work is a fun place to be. This must change.
Fun involves laughter and laughter is the magical gift that only humans have. We laugh when we are amused, surprised, or even embarrassed and that laughter has numerous positive benefits.
When you laugh, positive changes happen in your body. Laughter is a form of exercise. You’re exercising muscles in your face, chest, and abdomen. If you’re rolling on the floor... laughing like they do in comic strips, well, then, even your arms and legs get a workout.
It also eases your stress and releases endorphins, the body’s own natural pain killer. There is nothing wrong with laughter and it needs to find a space in the work-a-day world.
The best effect laughter can have in the workplace is when things go wrong. You can yell, swear, or blame somebody for a problem, but laughter can save the day. Mark Twain put it best when he said, “The secret source of humor is not joy, but sorrow.” When things go bad, laughter is sometimes our only defense against going mad.
I often cite the example of my mother’s funeral. When she died, the funeral director asked if there was anything special I needed. I said, “A big screen TV and a video cassette player.”
Before mom passed away, I converted the family movies she and my dad made over the years to video, so she could watch them whenever she wanted.
During mom’s wake, we played the movies nonstop in one corner of the parlor. It had an amazing effect. When visitors saw the movies, it brought lots of smiles and laughs to an otherwise somber event.
For my funeral, I plan on having a ventriloquist next to the casket so I can say my final good-byes to folks. It should be fun.

But how do you start a laughing culture at work? You can start with the joke of the day. You can tell it, email it, or post it on the bulletin board, if you have one. If you don’t have a bulletin board, get one. Put it up and encourage everyone to post their safe-for-work gags, cartoons, or jokes for everybody to enjoy.
If the day starts on a fun note, your people won’t look at work as nine-to-five torture, and will look at the positive side, why, because you started your day with a laugh.
Next, to enhance your sense of humor, hang around funny people. When you keep company with people who make you laugh, you’ll get funnier yourself. Plus, funny people are more fun to be around. Take a look at the next party you attend. Who gets the attention? The funny person who makes others laugh. You could be that person!
And, look for the bizarre absurdity of everyday life. As Steve Allen said, “Nothing is funnier than the unintended humor of reality.”
I generally try to find humor everywhere, if for no other reason than to avoid going nuts. I read the paper and watch the news with a WTF attitude, Where’s The Funny? It can be an effort in today’s world, but I always seem to find one bright spot. We are surrounded by so many bad things going on in the world that we have to look for the funny to survive. Try it yourself and witness the results.
In business, laughter plays a big roll. Everybody prefers to deal with someone who makes them laugh or smile. It makes them more comfortable, and if they are comfortable, they are more likely to do business with you.
And the process that is used to convert something you saw or experienced to a more humorous light is the same process used to drive creative ideas in business or problem-solving

The process used to process comedy ideas and business ideas is essentially the same. I was in the advertising business for ten years and am proud of the fact that I came up with the slogan, “Good to the last drop.” Unfortunately, it was for the Otis elevator company.
In advertising and comedy, you first conceive an idea for a joke, or an ad, or a new product. From there, you stretch and expand your thoughts. From there, you begin to trim and edit until you have the perfect joke, ad, or product.
When you have ideas or thoughts that may be funny, you need to remember them. Every good idea, in any situation, deserves to be written down immediately. Whether you carry a notepad or a cell phone and record your idea. Later, you can go back and review your idea to determine if you should continue to stretch and expand on it.
I read Mel Brooks’ biography and he said that he keeps a pad and pen in every room because he doesn’t know when inspiration will strike. That’s a great idea, so I copied it and put pads and pens in every room. I use them to jot down ideas and my granddaughter uses them to draw pictures for me. It’s a win/win.
These ideas should give you a start to bring more laughs to your workplace, and you will soon discover that there is a direct connection between the punchline and the bottom line.
